It has historical importance to all Muslims. Islamic Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam received the command from Allah to change the Qiblah Direction of Prayer from Bait-al-Maqdis in Jerusalem to the Ka’bah in Makkah. Everyone were engaged already in the afternoon prayer (dhuhr) Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam called out that the change of direction of prayer has been ordained, and upon hearing this, the imam immediately turned around to face Mecca, and those praying behind him also did so. After this, incident this mosque his companions named it as Masjid al-Qiblatayn
Muslims became completely independent and the prophecy in which was written in the old books had been fulfilled that the last of the great prophets would change the direction of prayer facing from Jerusalem to the Ancient House of Ebrahim (peace be upon him).
The mosque had two mihrabs. One facing Makkah and the other facing towards Jerusalem. The mosque was later modified and the mihrab facing Jerusalem was covered. The recent day mosque has only one mihrab which is facing towards Makkah. Pilgrims who go to Hajj often visit Medina, they want to visit this historical significant mosque.
The Qiblatayn Mosque is among the earliest mosques that date to the time of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, along with Quba Mosque and Al-Masjid al-Nabawi considering that with the Great Mosques of Mecca.
